I will be reading this one again and again. He says, “At the end ofI found that I could not remain connected with G[urdjieff] because I completely ceased to understand him and broke with him finally in January of ouspdnsky There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
But he goes to the lengths to say that if we have positive emotions one minute and negative emotions another minute it is not self-remembering, because we’re contradicting ourselves. When the protagonist realizes ouspenzky he can recall having lived his life before, he decides to try to change it. The technique requires a division of attention, ouapensky that a person not only pays attention to what is going on in the exterior world but also in the interior.
Didn’t read it cover to cover, but there are a lot of great ideas and it provides a very unifying framework for a lot of big concepts.

This is nuts, yeah. Tricky reading, but this book really helped me to learn how to concentrate again. And by telling other people to abandon their negative emotions, he is effectively telling them to repress theirs too.
One need not read with the idea of “buying into” anything If you experienced ‘self-remembering’ once or twice in your life, you will immediately know what it is when you luspensky the description.

This is a powerful idea, but not a new one: Even though Ouspensky consistently says that the system is practical and not theoretical, there is really nothing that actually tells you how to self-remember or become conscious, so your guess is as good as mine how to actually practice this.

I do find it interesting that many people downgrade this book because it discusses “old ideas” when Rl himself states quite early that the ideas are as old as man, but have been largely forgotten.
Definitely enjoyed the premise that human beings are “machines” and that all our dreams and daydreams are “evolutionary waste” But I trot it how it is. He just tells people to accept his ideas and practice it. Jamal rated it it was amazing May 25, Man does not know himself.
The idea in principle is good; that we need to work toward self-development and growth by becoming more aware of the multiple “Is” that we have through the centers and understanding how they can be used appropriately to transform ourselves. Individuals, not cultures, may enjoy positive evolution. Ouspensky was brilliant, the argument simple and breathtaking, for those who have the courage to consider the ramifications. The explanation is probably traot didactically, but it is oversimplified and it will get people into trouble.
